Peter Weir Films

Inspiration for new stories and filmic styles can come from anywhere, but one source that always proves fruitful is the work of other filmmakers. You can never watch too many movies.

We're fans of Australian director Peter Weir. His stories are always character driven, never dull. The cinematography is visually stunning. Often the pivotal scenes involve situations where the protagonist is forced, usually by his/her own heart, to break through the social milieus that stand in the way of one's true destiny. A theme that resonates strongly with us.

In this clip from Dead Poet's Society (1989), the main character of this scene, Knox, attends a party where he doesn't know anyone except Chris, a girl he likes. Unfortunately, she happens to be the girlfriend of the star football player. Knox has resigned himself to the fact that he probably won't have Chris when a situation suddenly arises where he has to make a decision. If he kisses the girl, he almost assuredly will face immediate retribution. True to Peter Weir's themes, the call of the heart is stronger than the reason of the mind.
